BOURGEOIS FEMININITY: A CONCEPT BY VIRGINIE DESPENTES
"The master's tools will never dismantle the master's house." AUDRE LORDE
"My Bourgeois Femininity" is a performance divided into three parts. It exposes the voluntary submission that comes with belonging to a social class, in this case, the bourgeoisie, with its demands and material trappings, as well as the belonging to a gender and the possible escapes from the roles imposed on it by the opposite gender. It highlights the complicated relationship with and toward submission generated by the distribution of roles between men and women, but especially among women. This relationship, combined with its capitalist conception, opens the door to the exercise of oppression from one woman to another as the only resource that generates independence and freedom.
