What Is The Redhead Project Virtual Edition?

Created in February 2021 in response to the pandemic and the global pivot to working and living virtually, Redhead Project Virtual features natural-born redheads photographed wherever they live in the world. The Redhead Project Virtual is an offshoot of the original, ongoing in-person Redhead Project, co-created in February 2013 by NYC-based advertising and editorial photographer Keith Barraclough and Kate Lorenz.

The project is as much a labor of love as it is of skill; we've built an enthusiastic community that continues to inspire us to tell redheads' unique stories through compelling imagery.

Like its predecessor, Redhead Project Virtual is a collaborative process between photographer and subject, resulting in conceptualized portraits that tell the redhead's story revolving around at least one quintessential personality trait, talent or interest. The result: imagery that's intriguing, beautiful, surprising, and sometimes a little quirky.

Frequently Asked Questions

I'm a redhead and want to participate. What do I need to do?

Email us at virtualredhead@keithbarraclough.com to schedule a 10 minute introductory phone call with the co-creators to begin the collaborative process.

How does a virtual photoshoot work?

We take virtual portraits using CLOS APP
available and free to download on smartphones (iPhone and Android).  CLOS has been used by the fashion and entertainment industries and publications (Vogue.com, The Golden Globes, and The Wall Street Journal, to name a few) during the pandemic.

The photoshoot session is conducted via a video call and works like FaceTime or GoogleDuo.  Redheads must download and sign into the CLOS App in order to be photographed virtually.
Read more about CLOS and how it works here.

A friend or family member can assist the redhead by holding the smartphone while taking verbal cues from Keith to move the smartphone, angle the camera, and be Keith's proxy set of eyes and ears in person while he captures the images remotely.  Alternatively, the device can be propped against using something around the house or in the surrounding environment, such as a tree trunk.

The newer the smartphone model, the better the camera and the sharper resolution of the resulting images.  We always recommend redheads use the most recent smartphone available to them.
